La Americana Selected for IFP Documentary Rough Cut Lab!

Posted by People's Television in La Americana

This just in from IFP:

“I am pleased to inform you that your project has been selected for the 2006 IFP Documentary Rough Cut Lab.

Scheduled to take place in New York from November 15 th - 17th, 2006. IFP Documentary Rough Cuts Lab will consist of three days of intensive seminars dealing with all aspects of finishing a film. The program is based on the assumption that your film is still considered a “work in progress” and, accordingly, will provide you with advisors and feedback intended to help you achieve the strongest possible version of your film.

While much of the content of the lab will be devoted to general information of use to documentary filmmakers completing a film and getting it out into the world, the sessions will be tailored as specifically as possible to your individual projects. As part of the program your cut will be confidentially shown to our advisors prior to the seminar so that their comments will be relevant to you. Additionally, you will receive feedback and mentor support both before and after the seminar as your film progresses towards completion.

We look forward to working with you!”

La Americana Synopsis

Posted by People's Television in La Americana

October 2000, Cochabamba, Bolivia. Carmen Tapia, a young single mother, faces a life-changing tragedy when her nine-year-old daughter Carla is struck and run over by a bus, leaving Carla in a wheel chair, and Carmen with insurmountable medical expenses. Unable to pay for Carla’s hospital bills and specialized care, Carmen borrows money from friends and family to keep her daughter alive. With no opportunities to earn a sufficient living to support her daughter, Carmen tries in vain to get a visa to go to the United States. As her desperation grows, Carmen decides to leave Carla behind and make the dangerous journey to the U.S. After nearly suffocating in the trunk of a sedan crossing the Mexican border, Carmen heads to New York where she can give her daughter the chance to live a life with opportunity, despite her disability.
June 2006, New York City, U.S.A. Living and working illegally cleaning houses and stores in the U.S, Carmen earns enough to support Carla from afar. Though Carmen is able to provide for her daughter’s medical needs, Carla does not understand why she must grow up without her mother. Carmen cannot visit Carla in Bolivia, as she knows she may not be able to cross back into the United States, on which their lives would depend. Unable to get any working papers, Carmen watches in frustration as congress defeats a bill granting amnesty to long-term undocumented immigrants. But as six years of separation approaches, so does the date at which Carmen promised her daughter they would be together again: Carla’s quiceañera. After risking her life to come to the United States, Carmen must sacrifice everything once again to keep her word and be at her daughter’s side.
La Americana is Carmen’s story, and the story of thousands of illegal immigrants forced to leave their families behind in order to provide them a better life.

About People’s Television

Posted by People's Television in People's Television

People’s Television® is a radically new Internet TV network that produces, collects, and distributes aggressively progressive programming for the online community. Our weekly webcasts feature documentary shorts, interviews with media makers and activists, and news commentary on events across the globe – delivered by people, not pundits. People’s Television is video podcasted through iTunes and the Democracy Video Player, as well as via the web at www.peoplestelevision.com and at www.ppls.tv.

Our first episodes will include the story of a young activist who took on the NYPD after being thrown by an officer through a storefront window, a glimpse into the Kashmir conflict through a tour of a martyrs’ graveyard, and excerpts from the award-winning documentary Mardi Gras: Made in China accompanied by an exclusive interview with Producer/Director David Redmon.

People’s Television was created to be a true television network. In addition to broadcasting our uncompromising, provocative content, we strive to build an inclusive community providing free exposure for independent media producers. We hope to branch out from our native New York and expand our community to enable local producers in different countries to reach an international audience by distributing through our network.

Despite the ever-increasing access to media and communication technologies, inadequate access to distribution leaves too many voices unheard. It is no longer necessary to rely on a vision of the world that is filtered and distorted by media conglomerates and distanced from our social reality. There is often a gap between the information we are given by mainstream television and the information we need to be socially-conscious citizens. As a distribution vehicle for media activists, video artists, and citizen journalists, People’s Television aims to close this gap.
